White Fur by Jardine Libaire
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book was so compelling and I couldn’t put it down.
Jamey comes from a rich family and Elise comes from a low-income neighborhood with all its attendant issues. They live next door to each other while Jamey is going to Yale. They are drawn to each other and eventually decide to be together no matter what.
They move to New York. When Jamey’s family find out about Elise, they try and get him to give her up. He doesn’t have much to do with them anyway and decides he’d rather give up his inheritance to keep Elise in his life.
They eventually get married and are happy until one night when they run into Jamey’s friend Matt and they go to dinner at his girlfriend’s house. They lace Jamey’s drink with LSD and it causes him to have a psychotic break.
This book was so good. In the last couple of chapters I was totally on the edge of my seat wondering how the story would end. Highly recommend!
View all my reviews Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan
I loved this book! Just like his previous two books, Rich People Problems is funny and highly readable. Kevin Kwan is one of my favorite authors! All the players are back in this third story of Asia’s most privileged families. The grand dame of the family, Su Yi, is starting to fail and the family starts wondering what who will be the heir to Tyersall Park, the families grand estate which is the largest private property in Singapore. Nicholas is the person everyone suspects will be the chosen one to inherit but he had a falling out with Su Yi over his marriage to Rachel and hasn’t seen her in five years. Eddie is hell bent on making sure that he is the one to inherit by blocking any and all comers who might show themselves to be a preferable choice. Kitty, now married to Jack Bing, continues to be obsessed with being esteemed in the highest social circles but finds herself continually bumping against his daughter, Collette, who has married into English royalty. Astrid, hoping to finally become divorced from Michael so she and her long time love, Charlie can be together have to fight against his unbalanced first wife, her family, and Michael. It’s a crazy time, a great read. I hope there’s a Crazy Rich Asians #4 in the works! Lift and Separate: A Novel by Marilyn Simon Rothstein I loved this book! It was fun and fast paced. Marcy is surprised that her husband moves out after 33 years of marriage after telling her of an affair he’d had with a fitting model at his lingerie factory. She was absolutely crushed and over a few weeks, when Harvey wanted to come back, she was actually considering it when he told her that the model was pregnant with his child. That was enough for March and she began to start her own life. I loved how her friendship grew with Candy as they went through the tough spots in their lives. I love how she finally began to realize what she wanted instead of what anyone else wanted after so many years of doing for others. This book was frantic in parts but laughing out loud funny in other parts. I highly recommend this book! At First Blush by Beth Ellyn Summer I loved this book! It was so cute. Lacey is a 17 year old YouTuber who’s channel is about make-up and called LaceyBlushes. She is chosen as an intern for On Trend Magazine for the summer along with two other YouTubers who have more followers than she does. She wants so badly to do a good enough job to get a contract with Glass Cube and be a professional Youtuber with sponsors and a production staff. There will also be a guest editor and she’s hoping it will be someone involved in make-up or fashion but it ends up being a rock star who’s left a band and is starting a solo career. Things go along well. Lacey loves being in the make-up room at the magazine and trying all the available products. Then she gets a sponsor who makes inferior products that she has to feature in her videos. She also gets involve with Tyler, the rock star guest editor. Her fans, who have finally gone over the million mark and have started recognizing her in public rebel. She is the subject of nasty gossip on a gossip site and eventually, she has to fight to have her YouTube channel reinstated when it’s deleted due to terms and conditions violations. This is a cute story of a girl who gets everything she didn’t know she wanted. I loved it! The Hollywood Daughter by Kate Alcott I love this book about old Hollywood. Set in the 1950’s, Jesse’s dad is a PR man at a Hollywood studio and one of his stars is Ingrid Bergman who Jesse hero worships for most of her life. The best part of her childhood was in the carpool when they stopped to pick up Ingrid’s daughter, Pia, and she would get a chance to see her idol. With the suspicions that there were communists among the movie industry, Jesse’s mother wanted her to switch schools and she began attending a convent school. The more her dad was involved in his day to day life, her mom sunk into her Catholic faith and there was much stress in the house. Jesse is a smart student and awarded the title of Valedictorian for her class. When she gave an award winning speech against the Catholic church and Hollywood, this title was taken away from her and angered her parents. By the time she graduated, she was so ready to leave her life behind and move to New York. After college and several years working for Newsweek, she receives an invite to the Academy Awards. Having left that life behind she wasn’t sure she wanted to go but after speaking with her lifelong best friend, Kathleen, who still lived in Hollywood, she decides to make the trip. The story goes through Jesse reflecting and sorting out her life and it ends on a happy note. Excellent book. I didn’t want it to end! 🙂 Piper Perish by Kayla Cagan I received a sneak preview of Peper Perish and I liked it. Piper is in high school in Houston. She and her two best friends plan to go to New York for art school after they graduate high school. On New Year’s Eve, her boyfriend, Enzo, decides he can’t be someone else anymore and breaks up with her. The preview revolves around what happened that night and her tries to get hold of him to make sure their New York dream will still be a reality. This preview was enough for me to know I’d probably enjoy the entire book. All the Glory by Elle Casey This is the best book I’ve read in a long time. Jason Bradley is the star football player for his high school team. One night, before a game, he’s arrested after being found standing over the coach’s dead body. Katy has lived down the street from Jason since they were little kids but they didn’t travel in the same social circles at school. When she watched how Jason’s former friends treated him after he’d been jailed, she decided that she was going to be his friend. No matter what it took, he had stood up for her and her friend, Bobby, when they were being bullied as kids and she felt she owed him that. I love how the relationship between Katy and Jason develops through the book. They get close and they talk about a lot of things but he does not tell her everything that happened that night at the stadium. Still, Katy feels that there is something more, something important that isn’t being talked about and she sets her course to find out what it is. This is such a good book. The characters are wonderful, the storyline is intriguing, and I couldn’t put it down once I started. I highly recommend this book. It will make your heart happy. Blogger Girl by Meredith Schorr I loved this book so much1 I read it straight through, only stopping to sleep. Kim Long is a legal secretary but what she really loves is reading chick lit and writing reviews on her blog. She sets her heart on hot Nicholas Strong, one of the associate lawyers at her firm. They eventually get together. She then learns that her high school nemesis has written a book. A chick lit book. They want her to review it for her blog but she is hesitant. She talks it over with Nicholas who suggests that what she really ahs against the author is that she wishes she were an author. They argue and break up. Kim takes a long look at her life and what she really wants from it. This is a great book, a wonderful quick read if you are like me and love chick lit. You won’t want to put it down! 🙂 The Trophy Child by Paula Daly I really liked this book. Very readable and unexpected! Karen is the mother no kid wants. Endlessly driving her youngest, Bronte, to exhaustion there is never time for the 10-year-old to be a kid. Noel, her dad, is a doctor and is oftentimes late getting home because of the tension that Karen brings to the house. Verity, his daughter from his first marriage, has a tumultuous relationship with her stepmom and the two barely speak. Karen’s son from an earlier relatinoship, Ewan, spends most of his time in his room getting high. The family is dysfunctional. One day, Bronte goes missing. They are unable to figure out where she went even after involving the police and news media. Then she walked in completely fine but not saying anything about where she had been or who she’d been with. A couple weeks later, Karen, turns up missing and when they find her, she is dead. This story has great characters and when they finally find Karen is gone, you can almost feel the stress lifting fomr the family. Unexpected. I had no idea the story would turn out this way. I give this book 5 stars. It was easy to read and I never put it down once I started it! The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett by Chelsea Sedoti Wow! What a great book. Hawthorne, the main character, is a high school girl who feels like she’s always on the outside looking in. When Lizzie Lovett goes missing, Hawthorne can’t believe that anything bad happened to her. Lizzie was the beautiful, popular, girl who had everything several years ahead of her in high school and one of the members of her older brother’s popular clique. In trying to make sense of what could have happened to Lizzie, Hawthorne inadvertently starts walking in her footsteps. With the idea that she could have become a werewolf, she tries to learn more about Lizzie by taking her open spot as a waitress in a diner in the next town. Eventually, she befriend’s Lizzie’s boyfriend, Enzo. Through all of this, Hawthorne is derided by her peers and struggles with her sense of self. Such a great story with effortless dialogue and endearing characters. Loved it!
